Sanford Health’s new orthopedic hospital and integrated hotel in Sioux Falls is highlighted as a forward-thinking approach to improving access to care across a largely rural patient population. By combining advanced medical facilities with on-site hospitality, the project addresses the reality that many patients travel long distances for specialized procedures.
The nine-story expansion includes 12 additional operating rooms, pre- and post-operative care spaces, and a hotel located on the top floors—designed specifically for patients, families, and visiting providers. This integration allows guests to stay just steps away from care, reducing travel stress and improving overall readiness and recovery.
A key focus of the project is the patient experience, with design and planning teams working to seamlessly blend healthcare and hospitality environments. Features such as dedicated mechanical systems, noise separation, and thoughtfully designed interiors ensure both clinical performance and guest comfort are maintained at a high level.
The result is a model for how healthcare systems can evolve—bridging the gap between hospital and home by offering a more connected, supportive experience for patients and their families.
